Samsung Launches the SNE-50K Electronic Reader

Samsung has entered another contender in the rapidly growing electronic reader market

Samsung has had plans for a while to get into the e-reader market. Originally named, the Papyrus, Samsung has renamed its electronic reader the SNE-50K (I preferred Papyrus).  The SNE-50K will initially be sold only in South Korea and Samsung has made no announcements about a possible North American release.

The SNE-50K is a small e-reader, featuring a 5 inch screen and weighing in at only 6.5 ounces. It has 512 MB of memory and is compatible with TXT files and PDF files.

The SNE-50K will also support handwriting recognition software, so users can write and store notes, calendars and schedules. These features are similar to those which night be found on a PDA.

Samsung has partnered with a South Korean online book seller, Kyobo Bookstore Company. Kyobo currently lists about 2500 South Korean e-book titles. The Samsung SNE-50K will sell on Kyobo's website as well as a few of its brick-and-mortar locations.

This week, Samsung announced the release in June of its new electronic reader, the Samsung Papyrus, making the seventh or eighth company to try and elbow into the hot and emerging electronic reader industry.

Samsung plans to offer their e-reader at $299.00 in an attempt to compete with Amazon's Kindle ($359.00) and the Sony PRS-700 ($349.95).
