E-ink is the new technology that differentiates the current generation of e-book readers from previous, LCD-based digital reading devices.
E-ink is the material (sometimes called e-paper) - developed by E Ink corporation, which is impregnated into e-readers' displays. The material is composed of millions of tiny microcapsules, each containing a positively charged white particle, and a negatively charged black particle.
When a negative electric field is applied, the black particles are pulled down away from the display, while the white particles are pushed up, becoming visible. Applying a positive field produces the opposite result.
The principle advantage of e-ink display is that it is not back-lit. This means that it is easier and more comfortable to read, even in daylight, and consumes far less power.
