What is E Ink?

Electronic Reader Displays - E Ink

Image of E Ink LogoSince late 2008 one of the biggest and most talked about consumer products have been electronic book readers. Beginning with the Sony PRS-500 Reader and followed closely by the original Amazon Kindle, electronic readers are revolutionizing the reading experience. One of the key features behind this revolution has been the e-reader screen, an electronic paper like display, otherwise known as E-Ink.

What is E Ink?

E Ink – the technology that empowers devices like the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook – is a proprietary electronic paper format developed by the E Ink Corporation. The display technology, called EPD – Electronic Paper Display – creates a screen display that simulates the experience of reading from paper.

The Apple iPad

iPad Overview

Image of Apple iPadAh, the iPad – its name synonymous with many a wordplay joke since its unveiling at the Apple Convention in January – the iPad tablet introduces what Apple hopes will be a new genre of computer device. Still, one of the most often heard criticisms of the iPad is that it is no more than a glorified iPod Touch. Between the portability and function of the iPod Touch and the popular Apple line of laptops, we consumers are left to wonder if there is room or need in the Apple family of high tech devices to warrant the creation – let alone purchase – of the iPad. If you find yourself in this boat of uncertainty, here are some points to consider.

Barnes & Noble Nook Electronic Reader Review

B&N Nook Offers Up a Challenge to the Kindle and Sony Readers

B&N Nook LogoAmong the recent releases on the booming e-reader scene is the Barnes and Noble Nook, which launched at the end of November, 2009. While we await consensus about the much-hyped Apple iPad, the Nook’s most contentious competitor is the market-leading Amazon Kindle. As the next major bookseller to introduce an alternative to hardcopy, B&N joins the e-reader industry, forecast to sell more than 6 million units this year in the U.S. alone.

Amazon now ships the Kindle DX to Canada.

Imade of Kindle DX Global Electronic ReaderA few weeks before Chistmas, Canadians were finally given a chance to purchase the popular electronic reader, the Kindle Global Reader. Now, Amazon has added their premium electronic reader, the Kindle DX.  Canadians embraced the Kindle Global and sales were reported to be strong over the holidays.

Amazon does however have some stiff competiton in Canada. Sony offers their line of eReaders (the Sony Touch and Sony Pocket) at selected brick and mortar shops such as Best Buy and Future Shop. Then, after Christmas, Sony began to offer its newest electronic reader,  the Sony Daily Edition which offers a large touch screen. Amazon is clearly addressing that challenge. Here are a few of the features you'll find on the Kindle DX...
